What is ADD / ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition of the brain that can make it difficult for the person to maintain their attention, follow directions and organize and complete tasks. It may also cause the person to feel restless, fidgety, to talk excessively of act impulsively. It is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood and adolescence. ADHD is not a discipline problem and definitely not a myth.

ADHD is diagnosed using standard guidelines developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. There is no single test for ADHD. The process requires several steps and involves gathering a lot of information from multiple sources. You, your child, your child’s school and other caregivers should be involved in assessing your child. We will look at how your child’s behavior, learning, and interaction with friends and family compare to that of other children his/her own age. This will be based on the information reported about the child by you, their teacher, and any other caregivers who spend time with your child, such as coaches or child care workers.

Successful treatment for ADHD involves a comprehensive program including more than just medication. It brings together special supports at school and at home, and “modifying” the behavior of the child (changing how homework is done, how chores are completed, how success is defined). A team approach is used so that your healthcare provider, your child, your family, the school personnel and  /or your child’s counselor or therapist all help create structure for your child’s success.
